As you can see, it is possible to free up a lot of disk space by finding and removing duplicates, old large folders and hidden cache files. This can be done either manually or with special apps designed for this purpose. Read how to clean up your Mac, even if your startup disk is full.
Mac High Sierra Manual File Sorting
For longtime Mac users who prefer the old sorting method of mixing everything together, Apple thankfully retains the option to switch back. Just uncheck the Keep folders on top when sorting by name box in Finder Preferences and file sorting in macOS Sierra will work like it used to in El Capitan and earlier.

Most macOS users are familiar with Finder's spacebar-activated Quick Look mode, which offers a preview of the currently highlighted file or files, but fewer users will be aware of Quick Look's fullscreen slideshow feature.
To manually fix a broken file reference, locate the missing file in the browser, drag it over to the File Manager and drop it on the respective line in the list of missing files. Note that Live will not care if the file you offer is really the file that was missing.
Note: in some internet browsers the manual will be opened directly in the browser and not downloaded. To download the file, right click on the link and select "Download linked file" from the context menu.
Python script with several options, including test mode, delete files if replacement name is empty, include hidden files, and manual filtering of some sort. (This also appears to be the most recently active of the three.)
To add files to your folder, simply drag the desired files into the respective folder. To do this, hold down the left mouse button and do not release it until the folder is highlighted blue. You can also drag the files into the open folder window. You can create subfolders within your folder, using the same options above.

Manual cleaning method is not only a long and inconvenient process, as you will have to manually search for all unnecessary folders and files, but also rather dangerous, because sometimes inexpirienced users can delete important files by mistake. All applications that you have purchased or downloaded from the App Store can always be re-downloaded. If you are confident in your abilities, follow just two steps:
2. press Cmd + Shift + G to open a directory search window and enter /Library/Caches. This is where you can delete the entire contents. It's true that in some situations you might snag something unnecessary, so take a good look at what's stored there, check the file size, and delete the largest files or those that haven't been used in a while. To quickly find out when a file was last used, or to see which one is taking up the most space, use the file sorting feature.
For any file or folder, you can quickly view its size by control-clicking it and selecting Get Info. In the top right of the Get Info panel, you'll see its size. You can also highlight a file in Finder and use the keyboard shortcut Command-I to open the Get Info panel.
You can save the scan record manually if you can't finish recovery this time and want to recover files from the same scan result next time. iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac saves your scan record automatically after you stop scanning an external disk and return to the home window. The scan record from an internal disk or volume won't be saved automatically.
There is an immensely useful tool I use called ncdu that is designed for finding those pesky high disk-usage folders and files, and removing them. It's console based, fast and light, and has packages on all the major distributions.
A Better Finder Attributes 7 can extract file date information embedded in file names and use this information to set the various file dates. This feature is highly flexible and configurable and covers almost any imaginable situations.
Transcoding reduces the size of any media file without affecting its final quality. As mentioned before, a rule of owning your own Plex Server is having a high CPU power to transcode files on the go. Although you might be able to direct-play a 4K resolution on mobile, within your local area network, if your Plex media server is not strong enough, buffering will be inevitable.
This is the least CPU-intensive method for a Plex Server, but the highest demand for bandwidth. Direct Play allows access to a media file without any modification, which means NO TRANSCODING. If the media file is 100% compatible with the client, Plex Server will take the raw file and stream it to the Plex Client as is.
Streaming a file with Direct Play to a remote location puts little stress on the CPU but demands a fast upload/download bandwidth. DirectPlay is the best option if you have a high-speed Internet connection and fast clients.
When you install Trakt.tv for the first time, you must manually input information, such as what you like and dislike. You can also upload all your watched history, ratings, and playbacks to your Trakt.tv profile and synchronize it with Plex.
To keep your Mac running smoothly and reliably, you need to prevent your hard drive from becoming full. You could, of course, just get a larger hard drive when your current one starts reaching its limits, but that would not only be expensive but also time-consuming, requiring you to manually transfer macOS and your personal files.
Duplicate Sweeper is a cross-platform duplicate file remover Mac and Windows users can use to locate and delete duplicate photos, videos, music, documents, and other files. The software offers two modes of operation: automatic and manual. As their names imply, the former makes it possible to automatically delete duplicates based on their file attributes, while the latter lets you manually select each duplicate you want to get rid of.
dupeGuru is an open source duplicate file finder Mac, Windows, and Linux users can download, install, and use completely free of charge. Thanks to its quick fuzzy matching algorithm, dupeGuru is highly efficient and capable of discovering hundreds of duplicates in a very short amount of time.
Duplicate finder software automates the laborious manual process of sorting and comparing files in an attempt to find items that can be removed to save storage space. A reliable duplicate finder is a nice tool to have around.
Can display the file name, full path, some of the embedded "EXIF" tags, and geo location, all of this as kind of caption with the image.
Keeps a persistent database of all the images found in the specified folder. This has the following benefits: handles huge image databases better than Apple's built-in screensavers,
startup is faster, and,
does not "exercise" the disk so much every time it gets invoked.
I have tested my screensaver with directory trees containing about 150,000 images (scattered amongst about 300,000 other files). Handles huge images, like 100+ MB per image on disk
Keyboard controls at runtime (ArtSaverApp only): go back to previously shown images (to re-visit), pause the slide show, reveal the current image in Finder, and more. For more information, see the Manual in the Options pane, or press H during the slide show.
Configuration options include: Duration how long an image is displayed
Visual effects: Ken Burns, zooming in & out, or still image
Which information to display at the bottom(file name, path, file extension, GPS location info,EXIF description and keywords, date; see the manual to learn exactly which EXIF tags ArtSaver observes)
How to search for images: Spotlight (much faster)or recursive directory search (can follow aliases and symbolic links)
Minimum file size and/or image size (e.g., in order to exclude thumbnails)
Many more ... (see screenshot on the right)
Programmers might appreciate the possibility to exclude images bya list of regular expressions (kind of file patterns);if the path of an image matches one of these reg-exp's, it is excluded
You can review the file names that ArtSaver has displayed afterwards(see the Manual in the Options/Preferences pane, section Difference Between "Use Spotlight" and "Follow aliases").
Observes the EXIF orientation tag
Can follow aliases (and symbolic links), so you can build complexfolder structures of images ArtSaver is to display(see the Manual in the Options/Preferences pane).
You can fix the zoom direction (in or out) per image, if you want. For details, see the Manual, Section Fixing the Zoom In/Out Direction.
You can have ArtSaver display images in random order, or sorted by file name, or sorted by the EXIF tag DateTimeDigitized (displayed as "Create Date" in exiftool). For details, see the manual, section The Order in Which ArtSaverApp Shows Images.
