When the first film hit box office gold, Andrew Lau and Alan Mak decided to revisit familiar ground though rather than make a sequel (which would have been tough) they opted to travel back in about ten years to show us what it was like for Yan and Ming in their younger days. The majority of the cast returns, Eric Tsang and Anthony Wong being the two heavy hitters, though this time the leads are played by Edison Chen and Shawn Yue, the two younger actors who played the characters in the flashback scenes from the first movie.
When this movie starts off the head of the Ngai triads is killed and his son, Hau (Francis Ng), moves in to replace him. Sam, the triad boss from the first movie, is obviously none too attached to Hau and wouldn't mind seeing he and his gang completely wiped out. Sam is also unusually friendly with Supervisor Wong, who also has a vested interest in seeing Hau's gang brought to their knees. While these two are carefully collaborating on how to make that happen, they're also sending in their respective moles, Wing and Yan, into one another's organizations.

The Blu-rayrnVideo:rnEach of the three films in this set is presented in its original 2.38.1 widescreen aspect ratio in AVC encoded 1080p high definition on a 50GB Blu-ray disc. Taken from 4k restorations from the original 35mm negatives, these generally look good, if never reference quality. Detail easily surpasses the previous DVD editions but never quite rises to the top of where you'd hope new 4k HD restorations would land. At least part of this would seem to be how the movies were shot, with the films leaning towards a cooler color palette, one that never really pops much. This can and does affect the way that skin tones look in the transfers. There is detail and depth to appreciate here, but again, it won't blow you away. The transfers are very clean, retaining some natural film grain and showing no really noticeable print damage. Some mild to moderate digital noise reduction seems to be a factor here as well, making skin look overly smooth and a little waxy at times.
Included inside the slipcover packaging alongside the three discs in the set is a full color insert booklet containing an essay on the film by Justing Chang titled Double Blind as well as cast and crew details for each of the three movies in the set and notes on the technical presentations.
Lionsgate Home Entertainment brings Evil Dead II to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as a two-disc combo pack with a flyer for a Digital HD Copy, giving owners access only to the 1080p version with legacy Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. The dual-layered UHD66 disc sits comfortably opposite a Region A locked, BD50 disc inside a black, eco-cutout case with a glossy slipcover. The aforementioned Blu-ray appears to be the same 2011 25th Anniversary release with the same set of supplements, but it includes bonus material from the European Special Edition. At startup, the disc goes straight to an animated menu screen with a still photo of the cover art, options along the bottom and music playing in the background.
Presumably coming from the same 4K remaster done by StudioCanal earlier this year for their European release, the 2160p transfer is remarkably sharper with far better detailing in the clothing, the surrounding foliage and throughout the cabin. In fact, viewers can now better make out minor scratches, defects and small imperfections in the aged wooden floors, the battered walls, the furniture and the random objects decorating the background. Lifelike facial complexions are highly-revealing and individual hairs are distinct, but best of all is seeing that the makeup and special effects have held up extraordinarily well. On the other hand, the movie comes with a fair amount of blurry, soft segments, which are related to the condition of the source and the original photography. There are also minor instances of negligible aliasing along the sharpest edges and very mild moiré patterns. Nevertheless, the picture quality is stunning and highly-detailed for a majority of the runtime.
Over 30 years ago, Sam Raimi broke new ground with Evil Dead II by further exploiting the macabre funhouse appeal of the first movie. The genius of this cult classic is the way in which it subconsciously reveals the ultimately silly and over-the-top nature of the horror genre. To this day, it continues to please and maintains an incredibly devoted fanbase. Raimi and chin-tacular legend Bruce Campbell revisit the creepy, haunted cabin in the woods on 4K Ultra HD with another gorgeous Dolby Vision HDR presentation that easily bests its Blu-ray counterpart and the same satisfying DTS-HD MA soundtrack. Adding one brand-new documentary along with the same set of supplements as before, the overall UHD package is recommended for everyone, but it's a must-own for devoted loyalists! 2ff7e9595c
